Rice planting season in Japan
This season, when the weather turns warm, is known by farmers as rice planting season. Since we have rice fields in Niigata, we can be seen busily taking advantage of Golden Week and the weekends to plant rice. After the autumn harvest, the dry fields are flooded, creating a beautifully serene scene as the spring sunlight shines on the surface of the water. The majority of harvesting and planting is done by machine, but in areas that are inaccessible to machines, planting is done by hand. Because of this, working family members, other relatives, and children all work together to plant the rice.

Festivals are held in many places to pray for a delicious rice harvest, and for nature's blessing that crops will not be spoiled by cool winters or typhoons.
Come Japan to see the beautiful spring season!

Carp streamer festival in Japan
In Japan, there is a long holiday in May called "Golden Week." It is made up of several consecutive holidays, such as "Constitutional Memorial Day" and "Children's Day", and when it falls during the right time of the week, can make for a full nine days off for some companies. Taking advantage of this long break, many people visit their parents' homes or travel either domestically or abroad, flooding highways and airports. On Children's Day, to celebrate the growth of boys, "Koi Nobori" (Carp Streamers) are hung up in various places. A unique Japanese custom, these Koi streamers, made from beautifully decorated cloth, are flown in the sky, symbolizing the vitality of the Japanese Koi fish. These beautiful decorations are not only displayed in the yards of private residences; In order to lift community spirits, in all locales, myriad Koi are hung up across large rivers, creating a magnificent brightly colored display.

Sakura season is unfortunately very short.
But “ Cherry blossom blizzard” at the end of the season when the wind carries thousands of blossoms in the air is a truly spectacular view.

Cherry blossom is special flower for Japanese people.
It tells us the end of the long cruel winter at last and the start of the gentle warm spring.
In Japan, the school year starts in April, and usually entrance ceremonies are held early in the month.
Even after graduation, April still to be a good chance to start new things for many people.
Cherry blossoms, which bloom around this time of the year, give grace to this new occasion.

Cherry blossoms, which bloom around this time of the year, give grace to this new occasion.
The custom of hanami dates back many centuries.
Also, Japanese love cherry blossoms not only because they are beautiful but also because they only bloom for a extremely short period just around a week.
This also means that once the flower bloom, all people gather to cherry blossom places at once and the places get to be so crowded.
Some friends of mine from overseas feel how cherry blossom special to Japanese and react like,
'' I also love flowers but we don't have this kind of flower viewing party in my countries. Japanese people are usually quiet and serious, so I was surprised to see them drinking and having fun outdoors until late during Hanami.''
Next, we'll show you some popular Hanami spot in Japan!

Deba knife, a Japanese knife which is specifically for filleting fish 2/2
Previously on this story.
Deba knife, a Japanese knife which is specifically for filleting fish 1/2
http://jpknivesoem.blogspot.jp/2017/03/deba-knife-japanese-knife-which-is.html
Why are deba knives single bladed?
Because single bladed knives are sturdier than double blade knives. Because they are used for cutting straight through fish, bones and all, in addition to filleting, these knives will see some rough use. The blades are heavy, so some people use them in a chopping manner as well.
A single bladed design is the best way to make a knife that can maintain its sharpness while still being sturdy. Double bladed knives tend to be thin in order to maintain a sharp cutting edge. In contrast, a single bladed knife can offer a similar degree of sharpness while using a much thicker blade.
What kind of deba knife should I choose?
The most important thing to consider when choosing a deba knife is the material it’s made from. Opinions are often divided regarding whether steel or stainless steel is better. You may be inclined to think that stainless steel is better because it looks nicer and doesn’t rust, but we recommend steel as it’s easier to sharpen and maintain.
Deba knives come in a great variety of sizes, which are suited to cutting different sizes of fish. Yellowtail and similarly sized fish call for a 180 mm blade, while a 120 mm blade is the most appropriate for fish such as horse mackerel.
If you’re buying a knife for household use, a smaller size will be easier to use, and can be obtained at a lower price.
