Rice planting season in Japan

This season, when the weather turns warm, is known by farmers as rice planting season.
Since we have rice fields in Niigata, we can be seen busily taking advantage of Golden Week and the weekends to plant rice.

After the autumn harvest, the dry fields are flooded, creating a beautifully serene scene as the spring sunlight shines on the surface of the water.

The majority of harvesting and planting is done by machine, but in areas that are inaccessible to machines, planting is done by hand. Because of this, working family members, other relatives, and children all work together to plant the rice.

Festivals are held in many places to pray for a delicious rice harvest, and for nature's blessing that crops will not be spoiled by cool winters or typhoons.

Come Japan to see the beautiful spring season!

Carp streamer festival in Japan

In Japan, there is a long holiday in May called "Golden Week." It is made up of several consecutive holidays, such as "Constitutional Memorial Day" and "Children's Day", and when it falls during the right time of the week, can make for a full nine days off for some companies.
Taking advantage of this long break, many people visit their parents' homes or travel either domestically or abroad, flooding highways and airports.

On Children's Day, to celebrate the growth of boys, "Koi Nobori" (Carp Streamers) are hung up in various places. A unique Japanese custom, these Koi streamers, made from beautifully decorated cloth, are flown in the sky, symbolizing the vitality of the Japanese Koi fish.
These beautiful decorations are not only displayed in the yards of private residences; In order to lift community spirits, in all locales, myriad Koi are hung up across large rivers, creating a magnificent brightly colored display.
